Over/under betting in soccer

One of the most popular types of bets among bettors is betting on total over/total under. This term is familiar to every gambler who has made a bet with a bookmaker at least once. But not every bettor manages to beat the totalizator on the total. From this material, you will find out what total betting is, and we will also give options for winning strategies in these markets.

What is total over/under

What does total mean in sports betting? This is the number of conventional units in a duel. Total in football – this is the number of goals scored, corners, committed fouls, in hockey – the number of goals scored, the total time of penalty minutes, in tennis – the total number of games played, sets played, draws. Bookmakers in their lines designate the total with the letter “T”, to which is added either “O” (total in bets Over) or “U” (bet on total Under).

Bets on total over – the total amount of goals scored (pucks scored, points scored, etc.) must be more than the designated number.
Total under – accordingly, you will have to wait for the match to have fewer goals, points, pucks than the specified value.

Total Over/Under from 0.5 to 3.5

The total in the line of the office can be denoted by any number, its appearance depends on it, which we discussed above. Different sports have their own totals – for example, in basketball and volleyball, bets on the number of points are accepted with a much greater value than in football on goals scored.

Extremely popular totals in the range from 0.5 to 3.5. An Over 0.5 bet means you need to cheer to keep the match from ending 0-0, but the odds for this market are usually extremely low. On the contrary, with a bet of TU 0.5, you will only be satisfied with a score of 0:0, which is estimated by a solid coefficient.

Similarly, with the rest of the totals up to 3.5 and above:

  • TU 1.5 – 0 or 1 goal (point) must be scored (scored) in the match;
  • TU 2.5 – no more than 2 goals (points) must be scored (scored) in the match;
  • TU 3.5 – no more than 3 goals (points);

When betting on TO, the situation is opposite.

Match result + Total

To get a higher odds, bettors can use combined bets from the bookmaker. One of them is the combination of betting on the outcome of the match and on the total. That is, you need to guess not only the winner of the match or predict a draw, but also predict how many goals will be scored (points scored).

Examples of such bets:

  • W1 + TO 2.5 (the first team will win + at least 3 goals will be scored in the match);
  • W2 + TU 2.5 (the second team will win + no more than 2 goals will be scored in the match).

1st Half / 2nd Half Total Betting

Bookmakers offer to bet on the total not only in the match as a whole, but also in a specific half. This bet is suitable if you know that this or that team scores especially a lot before / after the break. In this case, you can choose the total over/under in the 1st or 2nd half, and the outcome of the entire meeting will no longer interest you.

Example: you bet on over 1.5 goals in the first half. The game ended with the score 1:1:

  • both goals were scored in the second half – the bet lost;
  • a goal was scored in each half – the bet lost;
  • both goals were scored in the 1st half – the bet played.

Total + Both To Score

Another type of combined bet on total from bookmakers. The bettor is asked to guess at the same time the number of goals in the match and whether both teams will score. This is a kind of express train of 2 events combined into one.

If you chose “Both To Score + TO 3.5”, then both opponents must score, and at least 3 goals must be scored in the match. With a bet of “Both To Score + TU of 3.5”, it will suit you if the teams exchange goals, but score no more than 3 goals, or if one of the teams wins with a shutout (1:0, 2:0, 3:0).

Example: you bet “both teams to score + total over 2.5”:

  • the match ended with a score of 2:1 – the bet played;
  • the match ended with a score of 1:1 – the bet was not played;
  • the match ended with a score of 3:0 – the bet was not played.

Total betting strategies

Beating a bookmaker regularly takes more than just courage and intuition. You will also find proven strategies that tell you how to bet on totals and on sports in general. The total betting strategy is used by bettors for fights where it is difficult to determine the final number of goals or other statistical indicators on your own. There are several well-known strategies that, if used rationally, will allow you to regularly emerge victorious from the confrontation with the bookmaker.

Strategy for live betting on total

It’s worth mentioning right away that none of the proposed strategies will bring you a 100% win. This is just a certain algorithm of actions, to which luck and competent analysis must be added to win in the bookmaker.

  • Live bets on over 0.5. Initially, a negligible coefficient is offered for such an outcome, but if you wait at least half an hour, the quotes will grow to quite acceptable ones. You should avoid meetings of closed teams or matches in which both opponents are satisfied with a goalless draw. Also make sure the teams are playing with normal lineups.
  • Bets on “total under” after the effective first half. The essence of the strategy is to find matches with extremely productive first halves (from 4 goals scored and above) and bet on the total under in the whole game as a whole. If the teams had a shootout like 2-2 or 3-3 in the first half, chances are high that the coaches will make the right adjustments at half-time and half-2 will play defensively.
